Mental Punishment in Families
Within homes, mental punishment often hides behind “tough love.” A parent who constantly compares a child to siblings, saying “Why can’t you be more like your brother?” damages their self-image. Silent treatment, a common tactic, makes children feel unworthy of attention. Over time, this leads to feelings of abandonment and low self-esteem. Unlike grounding, mental punishment creates emotional distance that’s hard to repair. Families should prioritize open dialogue—expressing disappointment without attacking character. For instance, saying “I’m upset about your homework, but let’s fix it together” is more constructive. Recognizing these harmful patterns early can prevent long-term emotional scars.
